Show the Word

Up to this point, we have seen to be a maturing disciple of Christ on mission involves knowing God’s Word and growing in God’s Word. The knowledge of His Word should lead to transformation in our lives just as growth in His Word calls for a commitment to community. This commitment to community brings us to the third mark of a maturing disciple of Christ: show the Word. When we experience spiritual growth in a community, we are, in part, showing the Word. We are living out in front of others in everyday life what we are learning from Scripture. While many examples of showing the Word could be given, let us focus primarily on three. Gleaning from 1 Peter 2-3, we can observe that we can show the Word as the church, we can show the Word in our families, and we can show the Word to the world.

Show the Word as the Church
The Apostle Peter refers to the people of God, the church, as “living stones…being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ “ (1 Peter 2:5). The church is a people set apart, holy, offering their lives to God in praise and thanksgiving (2:9). We are not to live as though we are in the dark. Instead, we are called by God to abstain from the passions of the flesh (2:11) and live in the light by keeping our conduct honorable and doing good even when we are treated badly (2:9, 12). By these good deeds, we show the Word and we glorify God. We live out and show the gospel when we show mercy as we have received mercy (2:10).

Show the Word in your Family
We not only show the Word as a church, however. We also show the Word in our families. 1 Peter 3:1-7 paints the picture of a gospel-centered marriage that includes love and submission. Ephesians 5:22-6:4 too hits on what it looks like to live out the Word in our families. Husbands are to submit to the Lord and love their wives as Christ loved the church as wives submit to their husbands as to the Lord (5:22-33). Children are commanded to by God’s Word to obey their parents and parents are not supposed to provoke their children anger. Fathers are to bring up their children in the discipline and instruction of the Word (6:1-4). Nevertheless, love, sacrifice, submission, and obedience all go towards showing the Word in your family.

Show the Word to the World
Yet, if we are going to show the Word in everyday life, we must go beyond just showing the Word as the church and in our families. We need to show the Word to the world. While we will look at what it means to go with the Word later, it will suffice for right now to say we can show the Word to the world in submission and humility to our bosses and to leaders who have been appointed (1 Peter 2:13-20). The way we treat others in our relationships says a lot about the fruit we are producing. We need to prove to be faithful and fruitful to our Savior by following His example and living out our beliefs in the world by our humility. This is what it looks like to show the Word.
